What Are the Different Types of HVAC Filters?

We are all aware of the importance of air filters. They help heating and cooling systems work better in our homes. Different systems use different types of filters. To best maintain them, you have to understand the many kinds of air filters. It is vital to keep them clean. This helps to prevent costly repairs or poor performance.

Fiberglass Air filter

These filters are very affordable. But, they are not the best at removing dust and other irritants in the air. They are completely disposable and easy to change. These filters are not recommended for those with respiratory issues.

Pleated Air Filter

Pleated air filters are also an affordable option. They are great at removing irritants from the air that you breathe. These use pleated fabric. This is either a treated polyester or woven cotton fiber with pleats. For added protection, use the ones with more pleats. When washing these filters, make sure that they are dry before using them again.

UV Air Filter

This type of filter uses ultraviolet light. It isolates and removes virus-causing bacteria on the air. It is not the best at removing pollen and other airborne irritants. It is effective at fighting harmful things in the air. If you have respiratory issues, this is the best air filter for you.

Washable Air Filter

A washable, reusable filter is better for the environment. It will pay for itself in the long run, but it is more expensive than most disposable filters. When washing these air filters, let them dry before using them again. Otherwise, the damp filter can cause mold or bacteria. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintaining your washable air filter.

HEPA Air Filter

HEPA air filters are by far the best option for those with sensitivity to allergens. Due to their effectiveness, they are even recommended by the US Department of Energy. They filter out irritants with a 99.97% efficiency rate. This is the best air filter for people who have allergies, asthma, or pets.

Electrostatic Air Filter

With this air filter, you can choose between a washable one or a disposable one. It uses an electrostatic charge. This attracts dust and other particles in the air that can irritate your breathing.
