High Water Bills

Common Reasons Why Your Water Bill Is So High

There can seem like nothing worse as a homeowner than to open a water bill that is way more than what you're used to. Unfortunately, high water bills do happen. They're often due to a common plumbing problem. If you've opened a high water bill and don't know where it's coming from, check your plumbing. We've listed the most common plumbing problems that may be causing those high water bills.

Running Toilets

This problem may not be so obvious, to begin with. Over time, you may notice that you hear a constant running sound coming from one of your toilets. This indicates that the tank isn't shutting, and water is running down into the bowl. The flapper will need a replacement to fix this issue. If this doesn't work, try removing the hard water and mineral buildup around it to fix this issue.

Faulty Fixtures

Another common source of a high water bill is a faulty fixture. This can be coming from your sink faucet or even your showerhead. In most cases, the drip will come on over time and develop into a much larger leak. Take a few moments and look over all your faucets and showerheads to see if they're leaking water. If so, stopping the leak is usually as easy as changing out a faulty gasket for a new one.

Faulty Water Softener

A feature of water softeners is that they will backwash themselves with fresh water. When the valve for this process gets stuck open, it allows freshwater to dump into your sewer system. If water softener is to blame for your high water bill, contact a plumbing professional. Plumbers tend to have the knowledge and experience that homeowners don't. This is especially true when it comes to the inner workings of water softeners.

Leaky Appliance

Another costly cause of a water leak is a leaky appliance. Your washing machine, refrigerator, or dishwasher could be causing your high water bill. Take a few moments and check around and under all your appliances. It's very easy to miss a leak when your appliance is in a closet or under the counter.

Irrigation Leak

Your leak may not actually be inside. If you have an outdoor irrigation system, it may have developed a leak. The most obvious signs of an irrigation leak are plush patches of green grass or dampened areas on the lawn. If you suspect that you have an irrigation leak, it's best to leave this one up to the professionals. They have the right equipment to identify where the leak is and fix it.
