Can Air Purifiers Prevent the Spread of COVID-19?

Having an air purifier in your home or office is a great way to improve indoor air quality. When you breathe in bad air, you may be more sick, have more asthma attacks, or even more allergies. Depending on the type of air purifier, you can filter out pet dander, pollen, mold, and even viruses.

With many people at home because of COVID-19, indoor air quality is more important than ever. If you don’t already have a unit, you may wonder if a purifier will prevent the spread of COVID-19. Let’s take a closer look at this topic.

The Spread of COVID-19

When you’re in an enclosed space, COVID-19 can spread through small droplets from your body. This comes from coughing, talking, and even breathing. The majority of these droplets are heavy enough that they fall to the ground. In other cases, these droplets can remain in the air for an extended period of time. You can open up windows to dilute contaminants in a room. A purifier provides clean air when the weather may not let you open your windows.

Similar Viruses

There is still a lot to learn about Covid-19. Long after we’ve gone back to our normal lives, scientists want to find what makes this virus thrive. What we do know is COVID-19 acts like the SARS virus. Air purifiers with a HEPA filter can remove SARS droplets from the air. The CDC recommends air purifiers to prevent the spread of SARS in the early 2000s.

How it Works

HEPA filters can capture as much as 99.97% of germs that are 0.3 microns in diameter. The Coronavirus is 0.125 microns in size. Keep in mind, the droplets must be circulating through a room for them to reach the purifier. Proper airflow in a room with a purifier is ideal.

Not all purifiers are going to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is useful to have a unit that can remove the smallest particles from the air that you’re breathing. If you have someone who is currently showing signs of Covid-19, try running the purifier in their room. It may cut down on the number of germs that are circulating in the rest of your home.
