AC Mistakes

Biggest Mistakes You're Making With Your A/C

Having an air condition system is great to keep your home cool during those hot summer months. But, you could be making mistakes in your home that could cause your air condition system to work harder. Working harder will shorten the lifespan of the system, and will raise your utility bills. Avoid these mistakes to keep your HVAC unit lasting for many years, and keep your utility bills low.

Not Having Your System Maintained

A big mistake that people make is not having their air condition system maintained once a year. When a system is often serviced by an HVAC professional, it will help to catch any issues with the unit. It will also help prevent any issues from coming up.

For example, a dirty coil can cause the unit to run harder than what it should. This can lead to eventual breakdown. When a technician comes out, they will clean the coil, check for issues, and answer any questions you may have.

Not Having A Programmable Thermostat

Another common mistake that you might make is that you do not have a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat is ideal. You can set the temperature to a better temperature while you are not home.

When people are not home, it makes little sense to air condition the home too much. Set it on a higher temperature when you are away. Then, lower the temperature when you are about to come back home.

Not Using Fans

It is a good idea that on top of your air conditioning system, you use fans. Fans will help to keep the air cool because it helps to circulate the air throughout your home. This helps to remove some of the work that your HVAC system does. Make sure that if you have ceiling fans, they are set to go counterclockwise in the summer. Going counterclockwise helps to promote greater air flow.

Not Using Blinds and Curtains

Sunlight is not a friend to your air conditioning system. When sunlight comes into the house, this helps to heat it up. Keeping the blinds closed or curtains closed will help your system work much better.

Not Changing the Air Filter Enough

When it comes to your air condition system, one major mistake is not changing your air filter enough. When the air filter is dirty, it will not filter the air through the unit like it should. This can cause rooms of your home to not feel as cool as they should.

It can also increase your utility bills. Another issue with dirty air filters is that it can cause your unit to break down more. You should change your air filter every one to three months. If you have a washable air filter, you should wash it at least once a month. During allergy season, you may want to do this more often.
