5 Ways to Protect Your HVAC During Remodeling

Remodeling your home can be a big undertaking. While you're probably thinking about all your personal items that will need to be moved, that shouldn't be your only concern. Rather, you need to ensure that you protect your HVAC during the remodeling process so it continues to work properly. Here are five tips for protecting your system during remodeling.

Close Off Vents And Registers

While it's not necessary to shut off all the vents and registers throughout your home, it's important to do so for those in the remodeling area. When it comes to remodeling, there's always dust involved. If vents and registers are left open, this dust can easily find its way throughout the ventilation system of your home and other rooms. It's best to tape a piece of plastic around every vent and register in the construction zone to keep dust from traveling.

Do Prep Work Outdoors

While it may be very tempting to sand and cut materials indoors, you shouldn't. Any bit of messy work that can be done outdoors or in your garage should be done there. Keep as much prep work out of the interior of your home as possible. It's much easier to clean up dust and debris outdoors or in your garage over having to do so inside of your home.

Replace Filters Often

While you can do lots for eliminating a large amount of debris from your home during the remodeling process, there's always going to be some you'll miss. This is typically from people tracking the dirt and debris throughout your home when remodeling. It's best to plan on changing out your filters often. This can help to eliminate most of the dust from being inside of your ventilation system.

Don't Run Your HVAC At Times Of High Debris

At times when there is dusty work going on inside of your home, it's best to just turn the HVAC system off in general. This may not always be an option depending on the weather. However, it's a great tip if you can employ it as it will prevent dust from getting into your HVAC system.

Call In An HVAC Professional After The Work Is Done

Once all the remodeling work is done in your home, it's best to call in an HVAC professional to clean your entire system. This is just one extra step to help avoid unwanted debris and allergens from circulating in the air around your home.
